Some lunches need very little work. Good bread, a few thin slices of Gouda and ham will get you most of the way there. A sandwich is also a useful way to try a new deli cheese without planning a whole meal around it.
These combinations are suggestions to adapt to your taste. Use the bread you like, start with a modest amount of filling, and add more only if it needs it.
A mild Gouda and ham sandwich
Spread a little butter on the bread and add young Gouda with a thin layer of ham. Cucumber or lettuce brings some crunch. Pat any washed leaves dry before adding them, especially if you are preparing lunch ahead.
Young Gouda keeps the flavour gentle. Our Huizer Kaas Gilde young Gouda is one option to look at, while the cold cuts page lets you compare the available hams and pack sizes.
Mature Gouda with mustard and pickle
For a stronger-tasting sandwich, use mature Gouda and a small amount of mustard. Slice a pickle thinly and spread the pieces across the bread so each bite gets a little sharpness. Start lightly with the mustard; it is easy to add more, and you still want to taste the cheese.
This combination works well on a sturdy slice of bread. If the bread is very thick, cut the finished sandwich in half so the filling stays in place when you eat it.
A warm cheese and ham toastie
A toastie is a good option when you want something warm with the same ingredients. Use thin, even cheese slices and avoid piling the filling high. Cook it in your sandwich press or pan until the bread is golden and the filling is warmed through, following your appliance's instructions.
If the outside colours before the middle is warm, use a gentler setting next time. A very thick sandwich can leave you choosing between burnt bread and cold cheese. Serve pickles or a little chutney alongside rather than adding so much inside that the sandwich becomes wet.
Buy for more than one lunch
Before ordering, think about which ingredients you will use again. The same Gouda can go into tomorrow's sandwich or a few cubes beside dinner. Sliced ham can be portioned for another lunch according to its storage instructions. Check the product labels for storage and use-by guidance once your order arrives.
For variety, change one ingredient at a time. Try mature cheese in your usual sandwich, or keep the cheese and swap butter for a little mustard. You will quickly learn which combination is worth repeating.
