Some evenings call for a meal you can put together without much planning. Bratwurst, potatoes and something sharp on the side make a satisfying starting point. You can keep it traditional, tuck the sausage into bread, or use whatever vegetables are already in the fridge.

The useful part is choosing the sides before you start cooking. That way, the sausage can go straight to the table when it is ready, instead of waiting while you finish everything else.

Start with the instructions on the pack

Sausages are not all prepared in the same way. Check the product label for storage, thawing and cooking instructions, and follow those directions for the pack you have. A photograph or the colour of the outside is not a substitute for the instructions.

A plate with potatoes and onions

For an easy plated supper, serve bratwurst with mashed potatoes and softened onions. The onions can cook gently while you prepare the rest of the meal. Add mustard at the table so each person can choose how much they want.

Roasted potatoes work just as well if you prefer a crisp side. Cut them into similar-sized pieces, and plan their cooking time around the directions for the sausage. A small green salad keeps the plate from feeling too heavy.

Try it in a bread roll

A bread roll makes a more informal meal. Choose one that is sturdy enough to hold the sausage and toppings without falling apart. A few onions and a little mustard are often all it needs.

Put pickles or a simple cabbage salad on the side rather than overfilling the roll. This is a useful option when everyone wants different toppings: set out a few small bowls and let people build their own.
